What is a Cobia?
A cobia, also commonly referred to as lemonfish, ling, or crab cruncher is a brown fish that has a predominant dorsal fin with horizontal pectoral fins, that can easily be mistaken for a small sized shark. Cobia feed on a protein rich diet of Crab, Shrimp, smaller stingrays, eels, pinfish, and other crustaceans. Cobia are known to swim both alone and within schools, usually staying close to objects in the water such as sargassum grass, floating debris, buoys, channel markers, and sometimes are even seen traveling alongside larger sharks.
When targeting cobia it is common to use at least a 7000 size spinning reel with a 7’ medium/fast action spinning rod.During the springtime many of the migratory cobia swim just under the surface of the water making sight casting a highly effective option in targeting cobia.
One of the next things to take into account is the bait or lure to choose when targeting cobia. As mentioned earlier, natural baits such as pinfish, live eels, or live crabs tend to be some of the best baits to pitch towards a hungry migratory cobia. Other options when targeting cobia are traditional bucktail jigs and a wide range of realistic soft plastics that mimic the baits cobia typically feed on.
Due to their protein rich diet cobia is one of the best fish there is to cook. Cobia tend to have a naturally mild and buttery taste unlike any other fish. One of the best ways to cook cobia would be grilled cajun cobia! The best way to cook this recipe would be to cut your cobia into manageable 8-10 oz portions. Dry off any excess water from the cuts and then squeeze fresh lemon juice over the cobia filet and let marinate for about 10 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and your choice of Tony Chachere's cajun seasoning, or Cajun Two Step seasoning, Louisiana Cajun seasoning. Once seasoned, have the grill set to a medium high heat and lay the cobia filets down for 4-6 minutes on each side until the meat turns a nice white and opaque color. Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy!
Protip: If your cobia filets are about 2” thick they may take every bit of the 4-6 minutes to cook, if they are thinner they may take a little shorter time to fully cook, it really depends on the thickness of the filet.
]]>Freshwater reels are usually made with materials such as plastic Or Aluminum with non stainless steel internals because of the lack of corrosive Salt. Because of this, freshwater reels can be produced at a lower cost compared to their saltwater counterparts.
Saltwater reels are typically produced with materials such as Anodized Aluminum and Stainless steel Internals. The Reason for this is SALT! Water in and near the ocean typically has a high concentration of corrosive salt which can eat away at the entire reel if it is not made with the right components.
Saltwater Reels and Freshwater Reels vary drastically when coming to spool size and overall style. Saltwater reels typically can hold anywhere from 200 - 2100 yards of line. Conventional reels such as an 80 Wide can hold 550 yards of 150 LB braid with a top shot of 350 Yards of 130LB mono. The necessity for this much line is so that you can reel in fish such as Tuna, Swordfish, And Marlins without the fear of losing hundreds of dollars in line. When it comes to Freshwater Reels the spool size is typically smaller which allows for lighter setups and more control through the cast. Freshwater reels Typically come in either baitcasters or spinning reels, While you will see a ton of fishermen using spinning gear in saltwater, the same cannot be said for baitcasters. Baitcasters are not used for saltwater fishing because of the lack of line that can be put onto the reel as well as lack of drag. So while they may be killer for landing a trophy size bass, the fish in the ocean could potentially take all of your line and leave you empty handed.
Durability:
So which reel is going to perform in good working order over a long period of time? The answer might surprise you. Saltwater Reels are generally exposed to very harsh conditions such as humidity , saltwater spray from the ocean, as well as the potential for completely dropping a reel into the corrosive water. Because of this you may think that saltwater would not last as long but that is not the case. Modern reels made for saltwater fishing are going to be sealed better than a freshwater reel which limits exposure to corrosive salt. Freshwater reels are typically not exposed to as harsh of a climate as saltwater reels which allows them to last potentially a lot longer. It is worth mentioning that regardless of which kind of reel you are using with proper maintenance and care both a freshwater and saltwater reel can last for upwards 10 - 20 Years. Spraying off reels with freshwater and properly drying after each use drastically increases the lifespan of your equipment and allows you to maximize the use you will get out of a purchase.
The main differences between Saltwater Reels and Freshwater Reels is the materials they are made of. Saltwater Gear is made more hearty in order to be able to stand up to the harsh conditions of the ocean. This is accomplished by using Anodized Aluminum as well as a more tightly sealed casing allowing for a more durable setup. Freshwater Reels are typically going to be made out of cheaper materials but this does not mean that they are bad reels. Freshwater Reels are typically cheaper and hold their own in the freshwater scene. The necessity for high grade stainless steel components and expensive corrosion resistant aluminum are not present in freshwater, this allows the price to be a lot lower. In conclusion when choosing a Reel the most important aspect of making sure they last is to take preventative measures

Venice, Louisiana has earned the nickname “ Tuna Town USA” for a very obvious reason. At any given time of year a healthy grade of yellowfin tuna can usually be caught in and around the oil rigs, drill ships, platforms and lumps. During the winter months of February and March the boats in Venice are geared for what they call “ big fish season”. In this period of time it's not uncommon to see multiple 100lb class yellowfin tuna airborne as they crash schools of nervous baitfish, making for some of the most impressive blowups on the water. It's common for this time of year that while trolling for wahoo, every single rod in the spread starts screaming in unison with healthy wahoos on the end of each rod. It's this special time of year that anglers can cross trophy sized yellowfin and wahoo on the same day off their angler bucket list.
When planning a trip to Venice Louisiana paying attention to the weather is critical. The weather between February and March can be quite unpredictable. Weather monitoring systems such as Windfinder and the NOAA Marine Weather Forecast can help give anglers an idea of how the weather will look for their trip. Your captain will know what conditions are doable and when it's best to reschedule.
Gear:
When gearing up for a trip down to Venice Louisiana, Eat My Tackle has everything needed for success when targeting large yellowfin tuna and wahoo. You’ll need at least a 50w class reel and at least a 80-100 lb class rod for the majority of the large tuna and wahoo fishing. Another factor to take in account while gearing up for a trip to Venice would be how your reels are spooled. Some captains will tell you the sharks are so bad, they’ve had to beef up all of their tackle when targeting these large fish, just to keep them away from the Taxman (sharks). Some spool their large reels intended to target yellowfin tuna with 130 lb braid connected to a topshot of 130lb mono, changing out varying sizes of fluorocarbon leaders as needed. Other captains will tell you that 100lb braid with a top shot of 100lb mono is your best bet.
When picking a charter outfit to book there’s multiple different factors to take into account when picking a charter outfit to book. Crew size is typically limited to up to 6 people for most trips. The boats being run out of Venice are typically fast outboard boats such as Contenders, Freemans, Invincibles, Yellowfins, and a few other types of high performance fishing vessels. A few great options as far as charter outfits go are: Offshore Sportfishing with Captain Brett Ryan, Relentless Sportfishing Charters with Captain Joey Davis, Super Strike Charters with Captain Willy B., Gulf of America Outfitters with Capt Marty, Voodoo Sportfishing, Tripletail Charters with Capt Blake, Intensity Offshore with Captain Blake, and many more hardworking world class fishing charter outfits.
There’s a few different options for lodging when you get down to Venice, Louisiana. One of the most popular accommodations while visiting Venice for a quick fishing trip is the Cypress Cove Lodge, located steps away from the world famous Cypress Cove Marina. Other great lodging options are the Lighthouse Lodge and the Venice Inn Motel.
When down in Venice Louisiana, especially during the big fish season in the Months of February and March, food options can be limited. Once down in Venice make sure to bring plenty of food and water for both your time on and off of the water.
As far as what to wear, dress comfortably and warm. Coverall gear such as Grundens or Sitka with layers of warm clothing underneath are your best bet to stay warm while cruising 30 kts+ on these high performance outboard boats in the months of February and March.
Expect sore arms, memories for a lifetime, and epic catches of tuna and wahoo to fill your coolers to the brim!

When it comes to battling larger, fast-swimming fish, a 2-speed reel is your best friend. These reels offer the advantage of having two gear ratios — a high gear for quick retrievals and a low gear for increased power during the fight. Ideal for offshore fishing, 2-speed reels provide the versatility needed to handle a variety of fishing conditions and fish species.
Spinning reels are another popular choice for anglers of all skill levels. These reels are easy to use and offer great flexibility for casting various types of lures and bait. Spinning reels are particularly suitable for freshwater fishing and lighter tackle applications. They are known for their smooth drag systems and excellent line capacity.
If you're into deep-sea fishing, conventional reels are a top pick. These reels are designed to hold larger amounts of heavier line and provide the power needed to handle bigger fish. With their sturdy construction and high line retrieval speed, conventional reels excel in offshore trolling and bottom fishing scenarios.
Fly fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the precision and control offered by fly reels. These reels are specifically designed for fly fishing and are essential for properly managing the line and controlling the fish while reeling them in. When choosing a fly reel, consider factors such as the reel's weight, line capacity, and the type of fish you'll be targeting.
In your next fishing adventure, don't settle for anything less than the best. At Eat My Tackle, we understand the importance of having top-quality gear, and that's why we offer a wide selection of the most popular fishing reels on the market. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just starting out, we can assist you in finding the perfect fishing reel to bring home a prize-winning catch!

When it comes to saltwater fishing, the most significant difference is the corrosive nature of the environment. Saltwater can wreak havoc on your gear, but not if you opt for saltwater rods. Unlike their freshwater counterparts, saltwater fishing poles are specially constructed to withstand the harsh oceanic elements. These rods are made of corrosion-resistant materials, ensuring durability and a longer lifespan.
The ocean's depths present an entirely different challenge than freshwater fishing. Saltwater rods are designed with the strength and power needed to handle larger and more aggressive species. The extra backbone in a saltwater pole allows anglers to hook and control deep-sea monsters effortlessly, making them the go-to choice for adventurous anglers seeking the thrill of deep-sea fishing.
Saltwater fishing can take place in varying environments, such as inshore, offshore, or even along the coast. Saltwater fishing rods offer exceptional versatility, catering to different fishing techniques and targets. These rods can handle the weight of heavyweights, lures, or baits commonly used in saltwater fishing, providing anglers with the flexibility they need to adapt to ever-changing fishing conditions.
The challenges of saltwater angling test both the angler's skills and the fishing gear. Saltwater fishing poles excel in terms of durability, typically featuring reinforced guides and tougher blanks. These design elements minimize the risk of damage caused by strong tugs, knocks against the boat, or accidental falls during rough conditions.
When it comes to conquering the open waters, investing in a high-quality saltwater rod from Eat My Tackle is a decision you won't regret. Our selection of rods and poles, crafted with corrosion-resistant materials and designed specifically for the challenges of saltwater fishing, will ensure you’re well-prepared for your next adventure. When it comes to saltwater fishing, there are a few key factors to consider when selecting the best tackle for your needs. Firstly, the type of species you are targeting, and the area you are fishing in, will determine the type of tackle you need. For example, if you’re fishing for pelagic species in deep water, you’ll need a heavy-duty rod with a large reel and extra line, as well as a variety of lures and hooks. On the other hand, if you’re fishing for reef or game fish, you can get away with using lighter tackle.
High-quality saltwater fishing tackle is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the ocean. You don’t want to skimp on the quality of your tackle, as it could lead to a disastrous outing. Look for brands that have a proven track record of providing reliable, durable tackle that will last for years to come.
There are a variety of different lures and baits that can be used, and it’s important to choose the right ones to ensure you catch the type of fish you’re after. For example, if you’re fishing offshore, you’ll want to use a heavier jig head and heavier bait to attract the larger fish.

Saltwater is corrosive and can quickly eat away at your equipment. Saltwater reels are built to withstand the harsh conditions of saltwater fishing, with corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and sealed bearings. Choosing a saltwater reel with these materials can ensure your reel lasts longer and performs better, even after extended use.
Fighting bigger and stronger fish in saltwater requires a higher drag system. Saltwater reels are built with a more robust drag system that can handle the pressure of saltwater fishing. The drag system helps control the amount of line that's released when a fish pulls, ensuring you have better control over the fish and reducing the risk of losing your catch.
Saltwater fishing requires more significant line capacity due to the larger fish species and deeper waters. A larger line capacity ensures that you have enough line to handle the larger fish and deeper water without worrying about running out of line. Saltwater reels are built with a larger line capacity, making them suitable for saltwater fishing.
There are various types of saltwater fishing, such as surf fishing, offshore fishing, and inshore fishing, and each requires a different type of reel. Saltwater reels are designed to meet the different needs of each type of fishing. For example, surf fishing requires a long casting distance, and offshore fishing requires a reel with a high line capacity, whereas inshore fishing requires a lightweight and compact reel. Choosing the right saltwater reel that's designed for the type of fishing you'll be doing can significantly impact your fishing performance.
A saltwater reel is a crucial piece of equipment when it comes to saltwater fishing. It's essential to choose the right reel that's built to withstand the harsh conditions of saltwater fishing, has a higher drag system, a larger line capacity, and is designed for the type of fishing you'll be doing. Length
Saltwater fishing rods come in a variety of lengths. It is important to choose a length that is comfortable for you and that suits the type of fishing that you plan to do. Longer rods are great for casting farther out into the water, while shorter rods are good for fishing in tighter spaces.
Power
The power of a rod refers to its stiffness. Lighter rods are good for smaller fish, while heavier rods are better for larger catches. Your choice of power will depend on the type of fish you are trying to catch and the conditions of the water.
Material
Saltwater fishing rods are usually made out of graphite, fiberglass, or a combination of the two. Graphite rods are lightweight and sensitive, making them good for inshore fishing. Fiberglass rods on the other hand are more durable and better suited for offshore fishing.
Guides
The guides are the metal rings that run along the length of the rod. They are important for helping the line move smoothly and reducing friction. Look for guides that are made out of durable materials, such as stainless steel and titanium.
These are the key features to look for when choosing a saltwater fishing rod. Remember that the most important thing is to find a rod that is comfortable for you to increase your odds of catching more fish. Be sure to visit the Eat My Tackle shop for all of your fishing gear needs!

These tools are best to use with your deep sea fishing rod because of how versatile they are.
One of the great things about trolling lures from our online fishing store is that they come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. This gives you as a fisherman or fisherwoman the opportunity to experiment and find the combination that works best for the fish you're targeting. The lures Eat my Tackle provides to pair with your saltwater fishing rod are excellent for catching certain types of fish, including ones made specifically for wahoo or tuna.
When trolling for certain deep sea fish — such as wahoo, tuna, or billfish — you'll want to use a lure that has a lot of action. These fish can be aggressive predators and will strike at anything that looks like it's fleeing or mimic the appearance of their natural prey. It’s best to use a lure with your deep sea fishing rod that has a fast, erratic action and is bright in color, such as the ones from our online fishing store.
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a saltwater fishing rod is castability. This refers to the ability of the rod to propel a lure or bait through the air with accuracy. In order to ensure good castability, you'll want to look for a saltwater fishing rod that's made from high-quality materials and is the right length and power for the type of fishing you're doing.
The power factor of a saltwater fishing rod refers to the amount of pressure that's required to bend the rod. This is important because you'll want a rod that can handle the fish you're targeting. For example, if you're targeting small fish, you won't need as much power in your rod as you would if you were targeting large fish.
The length of your saltwater fishing rod will also play a role in castability and power factor. Generally, longer rods are better for distance casting, while shorter rods are better for accuracy and control. That being said, it's important to choose a rod length that's comfortable for you to use.
Finally, the materials used to make saltwater fishing rods are also important to consider. Saltwater is tough on gear, so you'll want a rod that's made from durable materials such as graphite or fiberglass. This will help ensure that your rod can withstand the elements and will last for years to come without corroding.

When The Tides & Currents Are Favorable
The Earth’s oceans are affected every single day by the moon’s gravitational pull, which in turn creates the tides we’re familiar with. Because you’ll use your saltwater fishing equipment on bodies of water like the oceans and other areas around the coast, it’s important to pay close attention to the tide and how the water is moving. As you plan your trip to hunt for saltwater game fish, remember to set off at a time when the water around you will be moving with the current — as opposed to static or “dead” water; this is because the fish are more likely to be active. One of the best ways to ensure your Eat My Tackle saltwater fishing equipment is not going to waste is to consult a tide chart of your chosen location and plan the best time frame to launch the boat.
Before The Weather Changes
Keeping an eye on the weather patterns of the location where you’ll be saltwater fishing does more than just ensure you won’t be miserable while out on the boat. It’s important to take this step before hunting for saltwater game fish because cool and warm temperatures can affect where the fish will be under the surface. To ensure a positive experience, Eat My Tackle recommends consulting the forecast and planning to bring your rod and reel combo right before a cool or warm front comes in, before the clouds gather. Saltwater game fish will need time to adjust to the changing temperatures once the front passes, so increase your chances of catching the big one by shipping out ahead of a major shift in the weather.
During Optimal Times of Day
Whether you purchase new saltwater fishing equipment or use your own reliable rod and reel combos, make sure you give them a chance to work their magic! Picking the best time of day to go saltwater fishing has to do with when the fish are most active, thus increasing your chances of catching a sportfish. As a general rule of thumb from Eat My Tackle, it’s best to plan your trip during the “golden hours,” which are dawn and dusk. During these times, saltwater game fish are coming out to feed, more so than at other times of the day. Compare these times to a local tide chart to pick the best possible slot to be out on the water.
During Peak Migration Times
One of the major benefits of choosing saltwater fishing over freshwater fishing is the large variety of sportfish available to catch. This is why Eat My Tackle offers a large variety of saltwater fishing tackle and rod and reel combos — to give our customers the best shot at catching saltwater game fish. Our store recommends researching beforehand the known migration patterns of certain fish species, so you can better understand when they’re more likely to be in a certain area. Other factors can also play into this — including mating season and overall feeding habits — which only increases the need to do your research beforehand.

Bluefin Tuna
Despite being typically seen further south in Mexican territory, Pacific bluefin tuna have swam their way to California seas. Breaking fish have been seen all the way from San Diego to Santa Catalina Island. Fishermen have been capturing this 100-pound sportfish at least eight miles off the coast.
Bluefins are said to swim 60 to 100 feet beneath the ocean's surface, and in some cases, even further. Because of this, it's critical to keep an eye on your fishfinder. Some people prefer catching them yo-yo style, which means they instantly drop their jig through marks and recover as fast as possible. Of course, playing around with different techniques is encouraged, but safety first comes first.
The largest recorded bluefin in California weighed 363.5 pounds. They are usually found from May to October.
Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin tunas, meanwhile, are often found in warmer waters. They are easily spotted swimming off the coast of California through Baja and around the northern part of the Channel Islands. Their distinguishing features are their conical head and the length of their pectoral fins, which stretch beyond the second dorsal. Anglers can catch as much as 400 pounds of this saltwater game fish. Harvests are limited to 10 per day, but fishing from 3 AM to 8 AM is said to be a fantastic time for more catches.
California's yellowfin tuna can weigh up to 200 pounds. It is captured in other seas, such as the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They do not reproduce on the coast of California; instead, they thrive further south in the eastern Pacific.
Bigeye Tuna
Bigeye tunas are also found worldwide in warmer areas. With a lifespan of seven or eight years, they usually visit California from June to November. Because they swim far below the surface in the daytime, they are fairly difficult to spot, with a good number of them taken by accident. Most taken in Southern California weigh 50 to 100 pounds.
A Tuna Haven in San Diego
San Diego is generally a good saltwater fishing spot. The Royal Polaris charter, for instance, is able to catch fish of more than 300 pounds. Skipper Capt. Frank LoPreste says that for every boat, they “usually catch between five and 15 fish over 300 pounds each trip.”
So how does a charter trip go? The boats leave from San Diego, heading to southern banks and islands. “We fish off the Lusitania Bank off Magdalena Bay, which is about 600 miles from San Diego; or in another area with even bigger success, Hurricane Bank, which is 980 miles south of San Diego. We also hit Clarion Island, which is about 850 miles away,” LoPreste adds.
Fishing for tuna in California will be a great new adventure for tourists as it is a staple activity for local anglers. It is therefore important to have the right gear and accessories to complement a good saltwater fishing experience. EatMyTackle.com offers a good array of items functional in a variety of settings, sufficient to meet your fishing needs.
Saltwater Fishing Equipment You'll Need for Tuna Fishing in California
There is a certain level of preparation and research that tuna fishing requires, as it does with any other type of fishing. The most important part is to have the proper tuna fishing gear so you're ready for when a big one takes the bait. Here are some saltwater fishing equipment basics:
These are just a few of the basics that you'll need for tuna fishing. Of course, there are many other saltwater fishing equipment options available, so be sure to do your research and check out selections at Eat My Tackle before heading out on your tuna fishing adventure.
]]>At night, your charter may advise you to try the “drift” method instead. Drift fishing involves positioning the boat in a spot so it drifts with the current over the pockets of bait you've found with your sonar. This can be a complicated procedure, as it may involve putting numerous lines in the water simultaneously. Without experienced deckhands, you may end up with a tangled mess.
Whether you are trolling or drifting, just make sure you have the best saltwater fishing equipment and at least a couple of experienced people by your side. It can make all the difference in your success — and safety. Check out the Eat My Tackle shop for gear and more advice on how to catch saltwater game fish!
Nylon monofilament. This is the most popular choice among fishermen. Despite the introduction of new types, it continues to be popular due to its low cost.
But it’s not just the price tag that makes it so highly regarded. When the line is new, it casts great and the knots in the monofilament hold together well. The line also has a natural stretch to it that offers unique advantages and a wide range of uses. All in all, when you get enough experience with it then you’ll get great value for the price. It’s great for new anglers.
Of course, it’s not perfect. Because of the stretch, when under strain the stretch will absorb or dampen lighter bites so you may not notice them. The stretch also makes it more difficult for you to turn a fish from obstructions.
It’s vulnerable to abrasions, so it isn’t always a great choice when fishing from a dock or rocky shores. Over time, the shape of the fishing line distorts to mimic the shape of the spool so you don’t get as much distance in your casts. And if you leave it under the sun, it will dry out and reduce its effectiveness as well.
Fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon is an incredibly versatile material because it's almost totally transparent in water, with a refractive index similar to that of water. This makes it ideal for use in clear water where fish are picky. It's also quite abrasion-resistant, making it appropriate for docks and fishing among rocks. The strain is also minor, making the difference between this line and nylon monofilament very distinct.
The fluorocarbon line's benefits are numerous. It is resistant to UV rays, so it won't break down over long periods in the sun, which is ideal for saltwater fishing. It also doesn't mirror the shape of the spool, unlike nylon monofilament lines. Lastly, it sinks rapidly.
Braided. Braided lines are often made of secret synthetic formula, which is then woven together like a rope. As a result, a much thinner line than fluorocarbon or monofilament is created, yet you get the same strength. This small nature allows you to cast further because the fishing line is more flexible, allowing you to make your casts at greater distances.
Perhaps the most notable feature is that there’s virtually no stretch to worry about. This means you’ll get a much greater feel for the fish. You’ll detect the lightest hits and you’re more sensitive to their movements. This also means that the hook sets more solidly and you get more force when catching sportfish.
With every passing day, braids are becoming more advanced, and they offer more advantages than ever before.
Picking Saltwater Fishing Tackle
Now that you know more about the three types of fishing lines, it's time to make a decision! But wait, there's one more factor to consider before you can purchase your fishing equipment: the type of sportfish you're going to be targeting.
Each sportfish has different habits, and they inhabit different environments. Some fish are easier to catch than others, but they all require specific saltwater fishing tackle. For example, if you're targeting tarpon, then you need a heavier outfit because they're such powerful fish. But if you're after trout, then you can use a lighter rod and reel.
Here is a list of sportfish and the type of tackle you'll need for each:
Now that you know more about the types of saltwater fishing lines and the sportfish they're best suited for, it's time to make your purchase! Head to the Eat My Tackle shop and get started on your next fishing adventure!
